I noticed that other reefer reviewers smoke their subjects back to back. I knew there was a more accurate way to test each strain without compromising the results. So, I came up with a purity test.
Your levels are at their lowest when you first wake up. I decided to use this time as the baseline and compare it to other day periods against different weed strains.
I spent six months traveling all of Colorado. From Ouray to Denver to Trinidad, I lived my dream of getting high and climbing mountains.
These are my notes on the best weed Colorado has to offer. It is important to note that I purchased all of these strains in 2021. I have been studying them until and through the writing of this blog.
Pirate Radio - Sativa Dominant:
This one was my earliest favorite. High in Linalool, this bud helps keep you calm and focused, perfect for both types of ADHD.
The batch I purchased expressed a beautiful lavender tint to it.
There is nothing special about the smell. However, you're tuned into a pirate radio signal once it hits, and things become more apparent and focused.
In my experience, this one takes a few minutes to kick in and produces intense euphoria, complete relaxation, and total focus.
Jungle Cake - Sativa Dominant:
An excellent replacement for coffee, this strain I found deep into Colorado in a little mountain town called Trinidad. It has a very citrusy smell to it, and the feeling after smoking it reveals its high level of Limonene, which gives you that energy, and intense euphoria, which is also known to help with depression.
Crescendo - Indica Hybrid:
This one is the most potent right when you start to get sleepy. You can feel the full effects when you lay down.
I can appreciate why many consider Crescendo to be Sativa-leaning. You feel an intense euphoria. When smoked in smaller doses, it is a Sativa dominant. However, like the chemical Dopamine, higher doses produce the opposite effect.
This one took time to grow on me. I initially was looking for a strain called MAC, and the budtender told me that this one was very similar to it. I agree that it gives a good balance between head and body. However, Crescendo is more of a sedative than MAC is. In my experience, it is my best-collected strain that will keep you asleep until you're ready to wake up.
There has been only one other exponentially potent strain that has been able to keep me asleep. However, it was homegrown by a friend deep in the Rocky Mountains, and I doubt she remembers which seed she used. Even if she did, the character traits would be hard to reproduce without the expert knowledge of a farmer. In this case, my recommendation for the most potent sedative cannabis bud would default to Crescendo.
Tropicana Cookies - Even Hybrid:
Suitable for winding down from a long day in the evening before and after dinner. You can feel the effects immediately. The smell and the taste are the same, fruity and lavender. Tropicana Cookies is the most beautiful strain out of all of mine. It was almost as if the growers designed it to look perfectly elegant.
This strain also appears to be a potent aphrodisiac.
Tropsanto # 7 joints - Sativa Hybrid:
The lavender color is out of this world! I've never seen lavender weed like this before! Very good for parties and for setting the mood. It produces a very mellow feeling. It is euphoric too.
I learned later on that Tropicana Cookies and White 99 birthed this strain. I prefer the feeling and flavor of Tropicana Cookies. I think the White 99 neutralizes specific effects, sullying the fruity, flowery taste.
Golden Goat 16% - Sativa Dominant:
Golden Goat is my favorite strain. Best smoked when you first wake up with either a cup of coffee or as a replacement. It feels like the first warm waves of a sunrise. This weed makes you feel very photogenic. The smell and the taste are precisely the same, an unquestionable super lemon flavor.
In my personal experience, not only do you get high off of the first puff, but you feel it almost immediately. Golden Goat is also one of those strains that prove not all weed is entirely dependent on the level of THC. Sixteen percent versus twenty-nine percent is a matter of how long you want your weed to last and the number of puffs it takes to get to the center of your chi.
This strain is also known to help out with depression and anxiety.
Uplifting, energizing, and euphoric.
I bought this strain in August of last year. This strain has lost much potency within the previous month (March 2022).
This strain goes great with Chem De La Chem and acts as a power high with Jungle Cheese.
Golden Goat 29% - Sativa Dominant
This brilliant billy is fantastic for inspiring creativity and is thirteen percent more potent than the other batch of Golden Goat.
The two main differences between this one and the other are that while both are healthy-looking, this one has superior genetics. The lemony smell can be noticed immediately before the bag is even opened. This batch offers a more robust experience.
After eight months, this batch still produces a solid citrusy smell. As mentioned earlier, most of the other strains have lost their aromas significantly, including the other collection of Golden Goat.
Miracle Alien Cookies - Sativa Hybrid:
I can't even look at this stuff without crying! It's that amazing! It creates a beautiful onion-like effect making MAC the MAC daddy of crystal-crowded cannabis. This weed is the perfect hybrid between Sativa and Indica that makes you feel like you've reached that balance Mr. Miyagi has always spoken of.
Higher doses continue to distribute the sensations to your body and head evenly. In this respect, MAC is a true hybrid.
Jungle Cheese - Sativa Dominant
The image of Kosher Dill pickles came to mind upon smelling and smoking this furry beast. Over time, I started to be able to break down the individual smells that make up the overall smell. I noticed the vibrant scent of extra sharp cheese, and you could argue an orangey fragrance too. Other reviews have suggested Cedar as a third smell. I can faintly smell it too. When comparing batches of the same genetic makeup, there are many factors and variables to consider.
Jungle Cheese tested at almost 36% THC and offered a very spacey type of head-high. It's great for hiking up mountains.
The smell is highly noticeable, and the taste is ten times more pronounced. This one is in my top favorites.
Mendo Breath - Indica Hybrid:
This strain is known to relax you. I can't put my finger entirely on it, but it has a pretty intense flavor. It almost has a cheesy, oniony taste to it. You may even argue that it tastes like diesel. This strain is what I call a one-hitter quitter.
Guava Wookie - Indica Hybrid:
As the name suggests, it will knock you into a sweet sleep. This marvelous wonder of a strain has an earthy aroma and taste. In my personal experience, depending on what time of day, it will have more Sativa-like effects. However, it is Indica dominant and is very noticeable, more so at night time when you're ready to go to bed. It is one of the few Indicas that can properly knock you out.
I first found this strain in Trinidad, Colorado, three and a half hours from where I was staying. I searched for this strain for months until it popped up again a half-hour away from me in Denver. I knew I had to share this strain with others.
Guava Wookie is one of my favorite Indica dominant strains. It is one of those weeds that looks way too sacred to touch. I barely can use a scissor to it. Just giving it a moment before smoking it to show appreciation is the only way to have the liberty to look at this stuff. It's that holy.

EZ Baked - Sativa Dominant:
This magical nugget will get you quickly baked with energy and focus. This batch had a reduction in price from what I gathered. It seemed like time was of the essence to get rid of the rest of it. I could only imagine how potent this strain was when it arrived at the dispensary. The company did not promote this baby well, or the shelf life is comparatively low to different strains.
Cherry Punch - Sativa Hybrid:
It has a very fruity and tangy smell to it! Very potent, and a very well-balanced head and body high. This one always makes me feel zoned out or zoned in, depending on what I do.
White 99 - Sativa Hybrid:
It smells like onions, maybe a hint of garlic. It's one of those hard-to-determine strains, but it does produce a pretty nice head high.
About seven months after purchase, the taste was different. A friend of mine who is just as enthusiastic about cannabis told me that it has a sweet, creamy flavor. While I disagree with it tasting sweet, I did pick up on the faint creaminess. You could argue the flavor was more akin to a hint of molasses.
Note to take away: White 99 is not a good mix with Tropicana Cookies.
Bazookies - Indica Hybrid:
This strain has a spicy smell to it. Extremely potent. It hits you pretty quickly also. You first feel it in the head, but it quickly becomes a body high.
GMO - Indica Hybrid - Evolved Into Sativa Dominant:
This strain originally had a spicy taste. I noticed a slight aftertaste of Ginger on the first test. I could have sworn I tasted a hint of cloves on the next exam, but I think I finally pinpointed the actual taste. Pepper. And the aftertaste is lingering. It produces an interesting sensation in your throat. It has a diesel-like/earthy smell to it. This product is best for nighttime and makes you sleepy. Most potent when laying down.
The smell and taste have changed over a year in proper storage. It now has more of a sweet aroma.
Truck Stop - Indica Dominant:
This one is for nighttime. Very good for falling asleep. After a long day, you might want to be knocked out by something like this. The THC level tested at 33 percent, producing a pretty intense body high. However, there is nothing extraordinary about it like Crescendo.
Blueberry Headband - Sativa Dominant:
This strain smells and tastes like blueberry. It gives you complete focus and is very potent. Tested at almost 28%, this one is a fun break-time snack.
Whether a high holiday or a birthday, this will sweeten up anyone's day.
Chem De La Chem - Sativa Dominant:
This strain, by far, is the most potent one I have. Even though it tested lower than Jungle Cheese, my experience has shed light on which one holds the title. It has a very diesel and lemon-like smell and will strike you immediately. Intervals are long, and the overall duration is lengthy too.
After a year, it is still potent, albeit a little bit less, and the smell and taste are not as pungent.
Original Sunlit - Sativa Dominant:
Have you ever heard of that song called "Walking on Sunshine"? This weed produces that feeling. When I was at a hippie party in Boulder, I was sharing this strain with everyone, and one lady got up and just started dancing freely to the guitars and unique instruments played. She only took one hit!
I paid less than $70 for an ounce of this magical strain. It is a hard grow; however, the next generation, Green Jilly Bean, came out even more healthy and vibrant in high. My interactions with three different dispensaries to get more of this strain led me to conclude that this strain may have become lost to the mixing of the gene pool. However, its predecessor does even better at producing the same high for a similar price.
Sunlit Green Jilly Bean - Sativa Dominant:
This one is known for inspiring creativity. It has a very citrusy smell and a very healthy look, essential in the overall picture. I am very impressed with its quality and even more impressed with how affordable it is.
The Hunt Comes To An End
After six months of hunting and looking back at my year-long adventure, I have concluded what the best strain of 2021 was. It was close between Jungle Cheese, Golden Goat, and Crescendo.
Jungle Cheese had the most fun high; Crescendo is a complete high that is best for keeping you asleep; however, it is the long-lasting lemony flavor that uplifts your spirit in the morning, Golden Goat, that wins the cake.
